The materials that Rob Uses are quite varied, they carry their own cultural meaning and their own charm, so he transforms them by working these objects into a new context and shape. For example ‘Asil’s armor’. In the Middle Ages, a knight’s equipment consisted of high-quality materials made with craftsmanship.
The material shift from often decorated steel to cheap paper mache toilet paper also causes a shift in the meaning of the final artwork.
While the knightly ideals have a cultural life, much of it is based on the exceptions not the rule. Many European Knights and Samurai in history were quite brutish and devious. The shift in materials transforms the original meaning in something more ambiguous and humorous.
